on a fri afternoon, couple of us were present in ac barker to give a career forum, providing some of the sec 3s with some form of career guidance and path.
didn't help though that most of the questions were directed at the adult triple x industry, either they were yanking our chains or they were dead serious in breaking into that field
but the session eventually became a serious q&a session with a core group of students stayin back to the very end.
as you can see from the panel, it's quite a good mix. from the jc and poly route. to the gone overseas, local and private unis. and to the various types of jobs they are doin.
course it could help if a medical staff was on board, glenn, fai....will be seein you guys next year? take some time off savin lives and save another kind of life.

she'll most likely distribute to friends and make kd take them down. feel for ya k.
ding's condo is worth a visit. with an eternity pool, hope i'm describing it
right. and a nice unit on the 8th floor.
so when ding ask ya to go over to penang, it's worth a trip.
pubbed by the evenin, but it's not as lively as singapore. it is after all

the day ding had to work, kd and i along with our back seat commander seow. went
about the town drivin from dings place to george town all the way to the beach near the shangrila.
the last day ding took us on a factory tour of his factory, techoflex.
all in all, it was a memoriable trip where friends can meet up in foreign locations.

So stupid.
SINGAPORE: National serviceman Corporal Dave Teo Ming, who stole a rifle and ammunition, has been sentenced to nine years and two months in jail, with 18 strokes of the cane. The sentence, which came 10 months after his arrest in September last year, was for three charges - illegally possessing a stolen army rifle and live bullets, and for carrying a knife in a public place without lawful purpose.
According to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Act, 20-year-old Teo is still liable for further disciplinary action by the SAF. Teo was arrested at Orchard Cineleisure at 8pm on September 3 last year, 20 hours after he disappeared with the rifle and eight rounds of ammunition from Mandai Hill Camp while on guard duty. His actions sparked off one of the biggest man-hunts in Singapore.
In the High Court on Monday, the prosecution said Teo was going to use the rifle to shoot his then girlfriend Crystal, who had broken off with him. Teo had also admitted to carrying a 40-centimetre knife on April 14 last year near Crystal's home. Teo had said he was going crazy after he returned from Taiwan as his girlfriend had broken off with him, his grandmother was hospitalised and he had not received his pay for the past three months after he was released from the detention barracks. He had also said he owed a lot of people money and he had no way out.
Besides pressing for a deterrence sentence, the prosecution said servicemen must understand that firearms are handed to them for the sole purpose of national service. Exploiting the weapons for any criminal intent is a gross breach of trust and must mean severe punishment. The prosecution also pointed out that Teo had cocked the rifle and loaded one round of ammunition into the firing chamber. That meant the rifle was ready for continuous fire. The prosecution said this clearly showed Teo "flagrantly disregarded the danger of carrying a loaded rifle in a public place".
The prosecution added that the offence was pre-meditated and so the sentence must reflect the severity of the offences. The prosecution noted that it is "most apparent that the actions of the accused have tarnished the good reputation of the SAF". In passing sentence, the judge told Teo that he hoped the 20-year-old will mature from this incident. The judge also encouraged Teo to continue his studies while in jail.
Teo's lawyer, K Mathialahan, said that "considering the circumstances, it's a reasonable sentence." Asked whether Teo would appeal against the sentence, the lawyer said: "I'm not sure, he still has time to consider."
Teo's friend, Ong Boon Jun, who did not report the NSman for possessing the rifle and bullets, had earlier been sentenced to six-and-a-half years' jail and six strokes of the cane. His appeal against the sentence was dismissed by the High Court in May this year. Ong, a 22-year-old pimp, was charged with being in Teo's company when he had the illegal items. The two of them were together at the Champagne Hotel in Geylang. - CNA/ir

Malaysia Raises Petrol Prices by almost Half!
Last evening the news announced that petrol prices would be increased by almost 50%! And that the new prices would take effect at midnight. So like every 'normal' kiasu person, i went to fill my tank at around 11+pm.
Wahlau.
By the time i neared the petrol station, I realised that i should have stayed at home. There were at least a hundred cars at each station! Crazy shit.
I went home without filling in the end. heh heh. Check out e news report below. It's gonna be pandemonium!
----------------------------
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's government faced demonstrations and public outrage Thursday over its decision to hike petrol prices 40 percent overnight, in a bid to curb its massive subsidies bill.
Opposition groups said they would hold protests in Kuala Lumpur at 11.30am (0330 GMT) and in the northern city of Ipoh at 11.00am over the "unconscionable" increase.
"The fuel increase is both economically inefficient and socially unjust," said Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party which is part of the opposition alliance.
"So long as rich companies continue to enjoy such fuel subsidies, especially the independent power producers, the fuel increase will be seen as both pro-rich and punishing the poor," he said in a statement.
The new pump price for petrol will be 2.70 ringgit (84 US cents) and 2.58 ringgit for diesel. Petrol previously cost 1.92 ringgit, among the cheapest in Asia.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's announcement on Wednesday evening triggered chaos across the country as motorists swamped fuel stations to fill up before the measure took effect at midnight.
Traffic snarls brought streets to a standstill in the capital Kuala Lumpur as up to 100 cars queued at each petrol station which still had fuel to sell, while many others said they had sold out and turned angry customers away.
Abdullah indicated that further increases were in the pipeline as Malaysia moves to completely abandon fuel price controls that would have cost US$17.4 billion this year -- about a third of the national budget.
"God willing I hope Malaysians will not demonstrate over this," he said, referring to fury over earlier hikes in a country where public transport is poor and most people are reliant on their cars.
Motorists who turned up at petrol stations Thursday to pay sharply higher prices to fill their tanks were uniformly furious over the decision. "We can do nothing about this government increase -- we have to buy fuel, otherwise how can we go to work?" said 56-year-old engineer K. Letchumanan. "For my family it's not so bad as we have two incomes, but the poor people will suffer."
Aminah Rahmat, a 46-year-old streetside vendor who had set up her food stall outside a petrol station, said she could already barely manage on her monthly income of less than 1,000 ringgit (300 dollars). "The government does not care for our welfare, that is why they have made such a huge fuel increase," she said. "How can I afford to pay so much to transport my cooked food to my customers? I will go out of business."
Bus operators said that a third of companies may have to close down and lorry firm said their rates would have to rise, in a move that will trickle down to higher prices for goods and services.
Abdullah is taking a major political risk in removing price controls as he attempts to recover from disastrous March elections that dealt the ruling coalition its worst results in half a century. Rising prices of food and fuel were a major factor in the ballot, which has triggered repeated calls for the premier to stand down.
"It is not an attempt to be popular, we have to think in the best interests of the people," Abdullah said Wednesday.
Under a revamped subsidy system, drivers of smaller vehicles will receive a cash payment of 625 ringgit to offset the rising cost, equating to subsidising some 800 litres of fuel. But economists said the subsidy cut was deeper than anticipated, and that the cash payment was not large enough to compensate for average use.
Abdullah said the price hike could suppress economic growth and drive up inflation as high as 5.0 percent this year, from current levels of 3.0 percent in April. As part of the subsidy reform, industry and power producers will be charged higher prices for gas from July. Electricity tariffs will rise 18 percent for householders, and 26 percent for commercial and industrial users.
But there was good news for Thais and Singaporeans who will now be allowed to buy fuel at border petrol stations after a recent ban was lifted in view of the subsidy cut. - AFP/ir

Pet Wheelchairs!
As you know, I'm quite into the whole dog industry. Thinking that someday I might open something related to dogs (other than the training, which Angela is already doing). So I'm always looking for ideas how to rip the hardearned money off pet-loving suckers.
Here's one! Eddie's Wheels for Pets!
With some dogs, it's always a toss-up as who is "master" of whom, and whether the dog is man's best friend or vice versa.
Our blue Doberman, Buddha, was on of those incredibly self-possessed beings who always took the attitude that eventually she would get her humans fully trained. She was a working dog, a companion and guard dog while Eddie was a field service engineer, and covered a territory that included Southern New England and New York. She had her favorite pit-stops and nudged him at mealtimes when they'd pass the golden arches.
So when she lost the use of her rear legs at the age of 10 due to spondylosis and disc disease, we felt we owed her the time to heal. She had always treated me like a servant, but now I was carrying her around in a sling, scrambling eggs for her breakfast, and doing massage therapy every night. In the meantime, Eddie, dissatisfied with what was available commercially at that time, decided to build her a wheelchair that would restore her to decent quality of life.

That was in 1989; the cart was clunky by today's standards, but it allowed her to walk in the woods and fields again, harass the woodland critters, and go wading in the swamp. A new symbiosis evolved, as she trained me to lift her and the cart over obstacles. We served her needs, and were rewarded several months later, when she began to walk on her own again. She taught us about the value of convalescent care, and awed us with her ability to rehabilitate in her cart. After only a couple of months, her paralyzed legs started moving again, and shortly afterwards, she was able to stand and walk on her own without the cart.
Our vet was impressed with her recovery, and over the years referred people to us who needed wheelchairs for their disabled dogs. With each cart, Eddie refined the original design to make it lighter and easier to use. Finally, his own disabilities forced him to leave corporate life and he decided to devote himself to helping disabled animals. A feature article in the local newspaper produced a spate of orders and Eddie's Wheels was born.

High Court overturns ex-teacher William Ding's molest conviction
For the overseas dudes,
SINGAPORE : The High Court has overturned the conviction of the ex-teacher found guilty of molesting two school boys.
36-year-old William Ding Chun Fong had been sentenced in March last year to 12 months jail on three charges of molest.
Overturning the District Court's ruling, Justice VK Rajah held the case was fraught with serious inconsistencies and irreconcilable material contradictions.
For example, the alleged molestation at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex in 2001. The High Court had found that the evidence given by one of the boys was contradicted by other witnesses.
The defence argued that there were inconsistencies in the evidence of the other school boy on whether he had shared a sleeping bag with Ding at a sports training camp in 2004.
The defence also argued that the trial judge failed to consider how the boy's claim, that Ding had massaged his shoulders in 2004, had changed a few times.
The High Court agreed. Ding and his family cried when the judge granted the appeal.
"I thank God for making this happen and I am also very thankful for my lawyers," said Ding.
"There will always be discrepancies in any court, (and) evidence will never be perfect," said Engelin Teh, Ding's lawyer.
Justice Rajah said, in his brief grounds of decision, that the prosecution must prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. He added that he had real doubts if the boys' evidence was sufficiently reliable to sustain the conviction.
The court also addressed a point made by the trial judge who had described the testimonies of the two school boys as "unusually convincing". Justice Rajah said that "would be a stretch of both fact and logic".
The closely-watched trial in the District Court had originally lasted more than 80 days spanning over nine months.
Ding, who has left the teaching career, now plans to be a trainer or consultant. - CNA /ls

Old Boy's debut documentary feature at The Picturehouse
From the OBA Website:
------------- My name is Ng Khee Jin (Class of 78) and I am the producer and director of the documentary feature Feet Unbound. My film will be screened in Singapore at Cathay's The Picturehouse from 17 April.
This is how it works. The smallest hall is an 84-seater, the next is 130+, and so on. Standard ticket charges apply - $7.00 for Mon to Wed, $8.00 or $8.50 for Thu and $10.50 for Fri to Sun. Official public release is on 17 Apr. The first private screening is on Thu 10 Apr evening. You can pick your own date depending on availability of hall. I can also make myself available for Q&A after the show.
Feet Unbound tells the story of Elly, a young Chinese journalist, who embarks on a journey to retrace the route taken by the teenage soldiers of the Chinese Red Army's Long March from central Sichuan Province to the edge of the Gobi Desert. It features vivid and often heartbreaking accounts of survival by female survivors mostly in their 90s. It's an inspirational story about the triumph of the human spirit and a slice of little known but very important modern Chinese history.
This film was an all-Singaporean and some ACSian effort - including the music score by Kelly Tang (Class of 77) and performance by T'ang Quartet - their first film project! My DVD distributor is also an ACS boy! I'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have, kheej@iinet.net.au

37 Weeks, Photo Collection: The Armstrong Kitchen Remodeling Disaster
It's a collection of photos that's bloody hee-lair-rious.
I have no idea how to spell that stupid word. It never looks rite. Anyway that's the way it should be spelt, so there.
Excerpt from the article.
"Although the official closing ceremonies on the kichen remodel occurred a little over two weeks ago, it has taken Jon and me that long to realize that we have to go back to a normal way of living, to days not spent roaming the aisles at Home Depot and nights not spent scraping or crushing or painting or wiring, to mornings not spent scrubbing toxic insulation out of our pores. A couple nights ago when faced with more than ten consecutive minutes of downtime we suddenly realized I was pregnant, and that holy shit, we might want to buy some diapers or something. The kitchen remodel was a great distraction that way, and now that it's over we're sort of looking at each other like, do you know anything about babies?"
